Freight transport Bulgaria
Bulgaria is the neighbour to the south and one of the fastest international destinations: from Bucharest, Ruse is an hour's drive away and Sofia a few hours. We run full truckload, groupage and van trips, in both directions, and transport onwards to Greece and Turkey.
Freight transport Romania – Bulgaria, in both directions
Between Romania and Bulgaria travel food and beverages, building materials, chemical and pharmaceutical products, grain, industrial components and palletised goods for retail. Many distributors serve both markets from the same warehouse, with daily deliveries across the Danube.
For freight transport to Bulgaria we organise:
- Full truckload (FTL): a 13.6 m semi-trailer just for your goods, directly from loading to unloading;
- Pallet groupage (LTL): for a few pallets or a partial load, priced per loading metre;
- Express van: for urgent parts and samples, with one or two drivers;
- Refrigerated transport: for food and temperature-sensitive goods, with ATP vehicles;
- ADR transport and oversize transport: with the documents and permits required in Bulgaria and in the transit countries.

The route to Bulgaria
The main crossing points are the Giurgiu–Ruse bridge and the Calafat–Vidin bridge, both with a bridge toll, plus the crossings at Negru Vodă and Vama Veche, towards north-eastern Bulgaria. Since 1 January 2025, Romania and Bulgaria have been full members of the Schengen area, and the permanent checks at the border have disappeared.
Road tolls and traffic restrictions
In Bulgaria, trucks over 3.5 t pay the electronic road toll (BG TOLL), per kilometre. The Giurgiu–Ruse bridge has heavy traffic and periodic works, which we take into account when planning the crossing time.
Documents for freight transport to Bulgaria
As it is a member of the European Union, goods move to Bulgaria without customs formalities. For the transport you need an invoice or delivery note, the CMR consignment note, completed at loading and signed by the consignee at delivery, and the UIT code from RO e-Transport, if the shipment leaves Romania and exceeds the thresholds.
Special goods need additional documents: the safety data sheet and ADR documents for dangerous goods, the vehicle's ATP certificate for perishable food, or the special permits for oversize loads, issued in each country along the route.

Frequently asked questions
Can't find your answer? Write to us at contact@transport-marfa.com or call +40 731 095 863.
How long does freight transport Romania–Bulgaria take?
From Bucharest, Ruse and Varna can be reached the same day, and Sofia and Plovdiv usually also the same day or the next morning, depending on the loading time.
Can you continue the transport to Greece or Turkey?
Yes. Many trips to Greece and Turkey pass through Bulgaria. For Turkey, customs formalities are needed, which we prepare together with the customs broker.
How much does freight transport to Bulgaria cost?
The price depends on the distance, the road tolls in the countries along the route, the type of vehicle, how fast the goods must arrive and how many trucks are available on that route. Send us the addresses, the date, and the type and weight of the goods and you will get the price within 30 minutes during opening hours.
Do you also offer pallet groupage to Bulgaria?
Yes. For a few pallets or a partial load to Bulgaria we use international groupage: you pay only for the space you use, per loading metre or per pallet, and the transit time is 1–3 days longer than for a full truckload.
What documents do I need for a shipment to Bulgaria?
As this is an EU country, no customs formalities are needed for Bulgaria: the invoice, the CMR consignment note and the UIT code from RO e-Transport are enough, if the shipment leaves Romania and exceeds the thresholds. Dangerous, perishable or oversize goods need additional documents.
Do you also transport goods from Bulgaria to Romania?
Yes. We run trips in both directions, loading anywhere in Bulgaria and delivering anywhere in Romania.
